Why 80% payout is not an 80% chance
Two different numbers that beginners confuse most often.
Separate the size of the payment from the probability of success.
Which of these do you control?
Payout is how much you will be paid on a win. Probability is how often your decisions turn out right. The two numbers are in no way connected.
- Payout
- — set by the platform, depends on instrument and time
- Probability
- — depends on the quality of your analysis and your selection of situations
The confusion comes from the format: both are percentages, both sit beside the button. But one is a condition of the trade, and the other is a characteristic of the trader.
The side effect of that confusion is very concrete: someone sees “80%” and takes the trade to be a bet with the odds in their favour. In reality, with no analysis the probability is close to random, the payment is below 100% — and the run ends in a loss.
Briefly: payout describes money, probability describes decisions. You do not control the first and you entirely control the second.
Key takeaways
- Payout is a condition of the trade; probability is a characteristic of your decisions.
- A random choice at a payout below 100% loses over a distance.
- Only the second half is under your control.
What people do
Choosing between two instruments by whichever shows 90% beside the button, and assuming the trade already has an edge. Payment and probability are different dimensions.
What works
When you see a high payout, ask immediately why it is high here. The answer often explains how difficult the instrument is.
A practical example
Run a thought experiment: a hundred trades chosen by coin flip, payout 80%.
The expected result: 50 × (+0.8) + 50 × (−1) = −10 trade amounts. Randomness at a payout below 100% always loses over a distance.
